Don’t You Forget About Hughes
Director John Hughes sadly died of a heart attack on Thursday aged ’59. You may remember him for introducing Macaulay Culkin, the spoilt blond kid who divorced his parents. Personally, I thank him for ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ which is my go-to-movie whenever I’m feeling under the weather (most recently a few weeks back with pork sniffles).
Regardless, if you don’t look back at ‘Weird Science’, ‘The Breakfast Club’ or ‘Pretty in Pink’ with a sense of melancholy then you, my friend, are not a true 80s child!

Unfortunately Kenny was too immersed in his love for Ferris Bueller and I clearly didn’t do a good job at proof reading

Kenny brought back many fond memories of John Hughes. I’ll never forget how charming Planes, Trains and Automobiles was. All of his stories had heart. I always wondered why we hadn’t seen movies from him in recent years and after listening to a radio show, I found out that he felt Hollywood played a pivotal part in John Candy’s untimely death and that he didn’t want his kids to be affected by the business.
There were so many wonderful movies he did. Even the ones that weren’t as well known as the ones you mentioned, John Hughes really gave his comedies heart and that’s what gives them staying power today. Great article!
