Tracy Bonham remakes 1996’s “Brain Crack”

The opening ominous and otherworldly bass synth is met with heavenly synths and high guitar caresses this thick soup of brilliance. A trippy mix of the avante-garde meeting tight, grimm fairytale vocal melodies create a song that conjures the beauty of Mazzy Star wonder, and the fantasy of Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth in just a few neatly placed and concise sounds.

This is Tracy Bonham‘s remake featuring Kathryn Calder (of New Pornographers fame) of the 1996 song ‘Brain Crack’, and what an immediately enticing outcome to what is one song from the 20th Anniversary re-imaginings of her album ‘The Burdens of Being Upright‘, titled ‘Modern Burdens‘.

The album which will feature guest female vocals from Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz, Sad13), Nicole Atkins, Rachael Yamagata, Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses), Angie Hart (Frente), the aforementioned Kathryn Calder & Kay Hanely (Letters to Cleo), and aims to bring these classic songs from the number 1 album a breath of new life and a different take on hits such as “Every Breath” and “Mother Mother“.

Modern Burdens‘ is out soon.
