Weekend Videos: Vern Matz – “Cityscapes”

I can name many a fine band who formed at college/university in recent years (Vampire Weekend, Coldplay etc) and on the basis of gorgeous single “Cityscapes“, Vern Marz, who formed at Yale, could soon follow that illustrious path.

The track introduces itself gently with frontman Daniel Belgrad lulling the listener in with his carefree voice but scratch beneath the surface and you will find a unique narrative. Building on this initial dreamy chord sequence and a dash of melancholia, “Cityscapes” eventually grows into a lullaby-like melody augmented by some sparse touches of piano and guitar. Still, the three-piece never sacrifices the initial intimacy the song delivers making it feel like the song was written especially for each and every listener.

If I had to throw one piece of criticism I would say the track feels way too short at under 3 minutes, or rather I could have listened to it for another hour. That’s fine because it just meant I had the track on loop for a few hours. I urge you to do the same.
