The Sweet Kill pulls us in with “Shutdown”

I’m always in awe of one-person projects, namely because I know how hard it can be to agree on even the smallest details with more than one person in the room.

Even more impressive is when said one-man project easily makes the sound of a full band and that is the case for The Sweet Kill, AKA Pete Mills, whose track “Shutdown” can very much be considered a twisted lullaby for this year and age. Written and conceived before the pandemic, “Shutdown” touches on some key themes that have been affecting pretty much every person on the planet since February.

It’s all about the delivery here with “Shutdown” offering an immediacy without overlooking a distinct pop hook and a lyrical message that feels important. The Sweet Kill has a thing or two to get off his chest as he races to get all his thoughts out before the 3 minutes mark but the result feels urgent rather than rushed and serves the almost waltz-like rhythm to perfection.

If you ever wondered what a fistfight between The Neighbourhood and Marilyn Manson (and who hasn’t?) might sound like then wonder no more.
