Weekend Videos: Folly Tree – “Mad is the beast”

Canadian born Alex Moshe is a regular fixture in the Tel Aviv music scene performing both as a guitarist for a few impressive acts as well as fronting her own Folly Tree band/project. To date, she has released a handful of singles, including a sweet cover of Arcade Fire‘s “Neon Bible“, as well as the well-received 2017 folk-pop steeped album’Consolidate’.

The release of “Mad Is The Beast” signals a new stage in Moshe‘s career showcasing an artist who is approaching peak potential both in terms of songwriting and musicianship. While not forgoing the organic elements that built the foundations of her previous output, this latest single displays a highly ambitious production and a more expansive sound.

Sparse piano notes are complemented by willfully off-kilter drum patterns as the track carefully unveils further layers of wondrous melodies. Lyrically the song tackles difficult topics involving trauma, personal boundaries and mental health with Moshe‘s stirring vocals lingering in the air like a dissonant memory. The entire piece is appended by a beguiling orchestral coda that feels more and more beautiful with each listen.

The track’s video is a compelling watch offering beautiful, if not somewhat unsettling, visuals that complement the music perfectly while alluding to some of the aforementioned lyrical themes.

Mad Is The Beast” is the first taste from Folly Tree‘s upcoming sophomore album ‘Remedies‘ due out in March on the buzzworthy Raw Tapes label.
