Weekend Videos: Ashtar Command – Mark IV

Ashtar Command‘s debut album ‘American Sunshine‘ was finally unleashed this fall marking the culmination of almost ten years of songwriting. One of my favourite DJ’s, and all round music guru, Chris Holmes joins forces with Brian Liesegang of Filter/Nine Inch Nails fame to record what is far from your typical 2011 release introducing obscure sci-fi references and a multitude of influences.

Here is new track ‘Mark IV‘ featuring Joshua Radin on vocals. Director Matt Ornstein delivered a brilliant video with his futuristic psychic spies and awesome views of LA. Check it out!

Weekend Videos: Gotye – ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’

Originally Emily was going to write a ‘Weekend Videos’ installment for Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know‘. Instead we liked her post so much we ended up turning it into a full album review. Here is what she had to say about the video:

Somebody That I Used To Know‘ has been the belle of the YouTube ball lately with almost 9 million views in the past 3 months (97 are from me). The clip reminded me of what a music video should be: a visually stunning accompaniment that enhances but doesn’t explain or narrate the song. The track itself is deliciously simple, with minimal instrumentation and vocals that alternate between bare confessional in the verses, and heavily layered harmonies in the refrain.

Weekend Videos: The Middle East – Jesus Came To My Birthday Party

The last time we wrote about The Middle East back at the beginning of 2010 we envisaged great things for them. Just as we were getting excited by the prospect of the release of the Australian‘s full-length debut ‘I Want That You Are Always Happy‘ we found out they had decided to call it quits.

Here is the video for first single ‘Jesus Came To My Birthday Party‘ which showcased how much potential the band had. Hopefully the memebers will return in some form or another in the future.

I Want That You Are Always Happy‘ is out now on Missing Piece Records

Weekend Videos: Girls – Vomit

When Girls released ‘Album‘ in 2009 they were a rare band whose buzz was equal to their talent. The follow up EP, ‘Broken Dreams Club‘ further cemented my infatuation with it’s Everly Brothers meets fuzzed out pop sound.

The San Francisco band have been gearing up for the release of their second full length ‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’ and the track ‘Vomit‘ is the first official single.

With a European tour planned for November there is no doubt Girls are on the up.

Weekend Videos: Errors – A Rumour In Africa

Last year we caught Errors on a co-headline tour with fellow Scots The Twilight Sad. On the live stage their synth-guitar-beat hybrid took on new euphoric heights.

The album ‘Come Dine With Me‘ is the bands first official release in the US and features the single ‘A Rumour In Africa‘ which was also given the remix treatment by Gold Panda. The Video itself is pretty special featuring an army of dancing marionettes.

Come Dine With Me‘ is out now on Rock Action Records

Weekend Videos: White Wives – Another City For A New Weekend

White Wives are at odds to point out this is far from a Anti-Flag side project despite the presence of members Chris “#2″ Barker and Chris Head. instead their inspiration comes for the mid-60′s Provo movement which relied on humor and nonviolence to provoke a violent reaction.

Indeed the tracks showcased so far show White Wives, completed by Roger Harvey of Dandelion Snow and Tyler Kweder of American Armada, showcase a summery reflective sound aiming to soak into the listeners mind rather than knock him on the head.

Sonically it is an interesting trip back to 90′s indie and alternative rock with it’s driving melodies and uncharacteristically idealistic message.

Check out the video the band shot on the road for ‘Another City For A New Weekend‘ using just an Iphone.

The album ‘Happeners‘ is out now on Adeline Records

Weekend Videos: Cee Lo Green – Cry Baby

Just last week we featured Teddybears and their single Cho Cha which in turn featured the amazing talent of Mr Cee Lo Green.

Ever since deciding that his vocals finally deserved recognition after years of guest performances and low key releases Cee Lo has wowed audiences with is various projects.

Here is the latest single from his fortunate album ‘The Lady Killer‘ which has proven to be one of the most successful albums of 2011. Good to see Jaleel White making an appearance in this video.
