Das Racist drop new track ‘Michael Jackson’

’Michael Jackson‘, the track,  is clearly Das Racist, yet with crushing fluency at a whole new level.

pulling in a Weezyish push and grind beat a la ‘6 foot 7‘ or  ’A Milli‘, yet injecting the lyrical curiosities we’ve all grown to love.

Michael Jackson… hakuna matata… yeah I’m fucking great at rappppping

i’m dj Khaled, i’m a daikon radish, see me next to sushi sexually, i’ll sex your coochie

Quoting their own lyrics I can pretty much sum up the feeling I get when listening, “watching parenthood on ketamine at the hotel“. Nauseatingly neurotic in a good way, and still managing to switch up and rearrange a stellarly sampled beat.

you feel me? holler!

PackFM releases I Fucking Hate Rappers

At the start of the year we featured PackFM‘s relentless verbal assault entitledHappy Days‘. The track, which sampled the American sitcom’s theme tune, had him reel of a list of everything he perceived was wrong with the modern hip hop industry.

The Brooklyn rapper is back with his ‘I Fucking Hate Rappers‘ LP and as you can guess by the title the subject of his wrath has not changed much.

The tracks are hard hitting and fresh and better sill, there isn’t a hint of autotune in sight!

The Letter P samples Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

I Would Californian rapper The Letter P is taking a slightly left of centre approach to hip-hop. After being behind the scenes for many years the writer/producer/artist emerged in 2010 with a series of mixtape appearances.

As he gears up towards the release of his debut album ‘S.I.T.K.O.P (Sessions in the key of P) he has let loose some tracks that serve to wet our appetite. Whilst ‘Brother‘ samples Cougar favourites Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Almost Famous‘ hints at what we will see on the album with The Letter P “playing” all the instruments with his mouth.

Keep your ears peeled for this one.

Busta Rhymes -Woo Hah (WrongMan Remix)

Our friends over at Friedmylittlebrain already posted this a while back but this Busta Rhymes remix from France’s Wrong Man is sweet as fuck. The fact that “Woo Hah!”, with its crazy video, was the track that got me into Busta to begin with helps and this version sure packs some extra punch.

Scroobius Pip book: Poetry In (E)motion

Seemingly not content with storming the hip-hop charts with his ‘The Logic Of Chance’ album Scroobius Pip released a book titled Poetry in (E)motion just last month. The book consists of fan artwork set to Pip‘s lyrics and is a great companion to the music whilst managing to stand on its own merits as a visual feast.

I’ve been taking the book with me on my tube journey’s for the past few weeks and the comic strips, graphics designs and inventive art pieces have literally brightened my day. After all, who wouldn’t want to see the lyrics to the fantastic ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill‘ in full graphic delight.

The book is available from Titan Books as well as all good online and offline bookstores.

PackFM looking forward to Happy Days

happydaysTake an instantly recognizable theme tune from a hugely popular American sitcom, bastardize it with some killer beats and juxtapose the lot with a sneering vocal delivery.

That is exactly what PackFM achieves with his latest offering cunningly titled ‘Happy Days. In just over 3 minutes The Brooklyn rapper shows a socially conscious world view arguing that we are settling for mediocrity and labelling it as progress. His tirade is very much against the idea that this upcoming decade will somehow atone for the mess that came before it.

It is not always cheery but PackFM definitely packs a punch!

Get your hands on ‘Happy Days‘ through the QN5 blog.

Beastie Boy Diagnosed With Cancer

beastiecollage

Beastie Boy Adam Yaunch (AKA MCA) has been diagnosed with cancer of the preaortic gland and lymph node. The rapper, flanked by friend and bandmate Ad-Rock, took a novel approach to breaking the news to fans by broadcasting it to the world via a youtube video and added that he expects to fully recovery. However, inevitably their tour schedule and imminent album ‘Hot Sauce Committee‘, due in September, will be delayed until he gets better.

I was lucky enough to catch the Beastie Boys in September 2007 at Brixton Academy in what was a stellar performance and I can’t wait to see them again. Here is to a speedy recovery to the man who has  got more rhymes than he’s got grey hairs, “and that’s a lot because I’ve got my share“.

Throw It On The Grill

turtlenex

I received a mysterious package from the elusive Turtlenex containing a first class ticket to New York for that weekend. I had heard rumours that the rap super group were planning their emergence but frankly I was a little anxious and didn’t know what to expect.

I got on the plane 2 days later to land at New York City‘s JFK airport early in the morning where I was met by a large man resembling Uncle Fester, from The Adams Family. He drove me to a remote location instructing me to blindfold my eyes when we were close to destination. Once I removed the blindfold it was clear I was in a massive abandoned warehouse.

What could have been a routine interview ended up taking just under 17 hours due to the insistence by the rappers that all my questions and all their answers be delivered through a massive Etch and Sketch seemingly purpose built for the occasion. I was rewarded for the ordeal with a large piece of Tuna and a copy of their beef squashing single ‘Throw It On The Grill‘.

After the ordeal Kylemikaze took me on a tour of New York‘s hottest nightspots, insisting on paying for every drink with a huge wad of $2 notes. He was also weary that we don’t spend more than one hour and twenty-three minutes in each location. After getting me sufficiently drunk I was reunited with Uncle Fester at 9am the next morning and driven back to the airport.

Here is what I have managed to decipher from my notes:

In late 2007, two men from a remote fishing village shattered traditional views of “makanan dr ikan pencuri“, or what is known as “fish thievery” in the United States. They also changed hip hop forever.

On Oecussi-Ambeno, a small island off the coast of East Timor, Chet Stewart and Kylemikaze were living in destitution, subsisting on dried fruit while honing what little skills they possessed as amateur fishermen. In order to survive, they made pickles, they conserved what little they had, and they stole. They stole from men, women, children, and livestock. They were thieves –”pencuris“. Weary from a life fraught with dishonesty and constant ridicule, the two pencuris decided to cast their lines North Westward or so.

They cast the longest lines they had –their penises– and reeled themselves in to the shimmering golden shores of the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, NY. From there they travelled further North and further West and carried with them their most recent booty from Oecussi-Ambeno: fresh tuna and mayonnaise. When they finally arrived in Manhattan, they went to a Subway shop and peddled their wares. One intrigued franchise owner bought a tuna and a jar of mayonnaise from Chet and began selling it to his customers. Low and behold, the customer returned for more and garnered interest from people in nearby neighbourhoods. And so the Tuna Sandwich(TM) on Honey Oat (TM), Italian Cheese and Herb(TM), Italian(TM), or Wheat(TM) was born.

After the success of the semi-popular Tuna Sandwich Sub at Subway(TM), Chet and Kyle acquired heaps of dollars So once again they cast their penises across the world and reeled themselves back to Oecussi-Ambeno to disperse their newly acquired riches among the villagers. “Mengambil uang ini! Makan! Maaf!” (“Take this money! Eat! We are sorry!“). The villagers, eager to hear the stories of the adventurers’ travels told in a tale that would please the ear, demanded that the two former pencuris tell their story in verse form. So they wrote raps. This is their story. In Oecussi-Ambeno, Chet and Kylemikaze are known as fish thieves-turned-heros. In New York City and everywhere else in the world they are known as Turtlenex. This is their music.
