With the release of ‘Last Night On Earth‘ in March Noah And The Whale signalled a new chapter in the band’s history. Whereas their debut ‘Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down‘ was characterised by the band’s youthful innocence and bashful approach it’s follow up ‘The First Day Of Spring‘ was a decidedly more sombre affair successfully exploring darker emotional territories.
the 2011 veersion of the band, and more specifically frontman Charlie Fink, appear to have overcome the recent heartache. Crucially however the detailed storytelling delivery remains. Bonus points for recording the album in an East London synagogue.
Here is a reworking of ‘Tonight’s the Kind Of Night‘ by Cougar friends RAC adding even more shiny pop aesthetic to the track.
As an extra treat to see out the week here is Mr Little Jeans as she lends some elegant electronic undertones to the title track from Arcade Fire‘s 2010 ‘The Suburbs‘ masterpiece.
As a special bonus treat here is a video of Party Supplies, who famously gave us this remix of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros‘ ‘Home‘, performing a spot of live remixing. Impressive stuff indeed.
Additionally here is a sprinkle of Party Supplies on tracks from the our # 1 and # 2 albums of 2010.
Chances are you have already heard Adele‘s fabulous ‘Rolling In The Deep‘ a few hundred times. It is possible even that you have already enjoyed John Legend‘s haunting acapella rendition as well. What you should be listening to now is Error Operator‘s subtle treatment of the latter cover.
In the past we have featured the British producer’s own material as well as remixes of the likes of Passion Pit, Does It Offend You, Yeah, UNKLE and Radiohead (get your hands on these if you can find them).
There is something so elegant and restrained about the way he works tracks highlighting underlying melodies with his minimalistic palette and layers of sounds.
I have just returned from seeing Edward Sharpe & The Fantastic Zeros playing at the Old Vic Tunnels near Waterloo. Both the band and the venue were extraordinary and a full review will be up on this pages shortly.
In the meantime here is the video for ‘40 Day Dream‘, the latest instalment in the bands 12-part music video series. The story continues with the character Edward Sharpe meeting the rest of The Magnetic Zeros. If you haven’t seen the previous videos for ‘Kisses Over Babylon‘ and ‘Desert Song‘ then catch them now. You are in for a treat.
We are a bit impartial to a bit of The Doors on this blog and someone must have spotted it when sending this in. The independent video for this dubbish remix of ‘People Are Strange‘ is fantastically shot and very entertaining.
Following a prolonger absence, largely due to this massive undertaking, Weekend Videos is back with a few of my favourite music videos from the golden age of MTV.
First up is the BeastieBoys amazing 70′s cop show mocking video for ‘Sabotage‘. I must have seen this video thousands of times back when it first emerged and I’m pretty sure I can watch it a thousand more.
It was a slight suprise to me to see Two Door Cinema Club homed up with predominantly electronic label Kitsuné Music to release their debut ‘Tourist History‘. The benefit of such an arrangement must be that the Northern Irish band have access to some incredible talent when it comes to remixes.
So on top of releasing this live version for ‘I Can Talk‘ they’ve also unveiled remix work by the likes of Golden Bug, Crystal Fighters and French Horn Rebellion.
