Weekend Videos: School Of Seven Bells – I L U

School Of Seven Bells dropped the follow up to their 2008 album ‘Alpinism‘ this summer showcasing an increased awareness in their dreamy electro landscapes. The trio’s success on ‘Disconnect From Desire‘ lies in conveying emotions through the lyrics and atmospherics in vivid fashion.

New single ‘I L U‘ is full of subtle intricacies and comes equipped with a delightful stop motion video.

School Of Seven Bells set out on the road in Northern America early next year on tour with Interpol. ‘Disconnect From Desire‘ is out now on Vagrant Records.

Pj Harvey set to release ‘Let England Shake’ in 2011

Fans of PJ Harvey will already be all over this but if you haven’t caught on yet Polly Jean has unveiled a new track ‘Written On The Forehead‘.  This is the first taste of her 8th studio album ‘Let England Shake‘ and promises to be another stormer.

I especially like the news that esteemed photographer Seamus Murphy directed a series of short films to accompany each of the 12 tracks on the album. Murphy undertook a long journey to document his vision of England matching it with visuals and lyrics from the British icon. The first video is set to be unveiled on the 20th of December so keep an eye out for this.

Let England Shake’ is set for release in February 2011 on Island Records and Vagrant Records in the US.

Vagrant at SxSW plus Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros remix track

Out of intense envy for everyone who is going to SxSW I considered a silent protest for the duration of the event. However, having featured Nevada‘s Burning Man Festival a few days ago I figured the awesome Austin event deserves some Cougar loving too.

Besides, as you can see from the flyer above the guys at Vagrant are putting on showcase next week is below featuring some of the bands we have been covering on these pages. If you are out there drop by and make sure you tell them Cougar Microbes sent you.

Talking of Vagrant bands, It has been a while since I have written about Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and that just can’t be right so here is a new remix of  ’Home‘. Considering this is my personal favourite track anybody fiddling with is heading into risky territory. I’m glad to say André Anjos of RAC manages to pull it off creating a track that is unique in its own right yet doesn’t hide the source material entirely from the listener.

So Many Dynamos tour to support Loud Wars

So Many DynamosAn old Chevy van has its windows smashed. Shattered glass litters the pavement, reflecting the yellow sodium streetlight above. The thieves quickly vanish into the darkened alleys with their loot.

Following the robbery outside a concert venue in Seattle, the band So Many Dynamos were left without any guitars and seemingly unable to make the scheduled performance that night, let alone continue their ambitious nation-wide tour.

This was not the end, but the start of what was to become the ‘Loud Wars’ album. To the rescue came Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla, who lent them the equipment, and a few years later collaborated on the album, specifically the track ‘New Bones’.

The song has a similar style to The Postal Service, with clear vocal melody, and a strong overlay of electronic sound effects to the quasi-dance beat. The choruses take you on a merry-go-round and then return to the angular and rhythmic verses. It almost sounds like a remix, with its gunshot snare, keyboard bass lines, and beeping in parts.

Perhaps the instrumental is a little over the top in places, taking center stage to the singing at times, but this is a song that shows off both song writing and studio creativity. The prowess lies in combining both elements, and they have done it to a T.

Formed in Edwardsville, Illinois in 2002, the band named themselves after a famous palindrome (look that one up), and have been branded a mixed bag of  dance-punk, math rock, and indie-pop.

So Many Dynamos set out on a mini European tour in February taking in some UK dates as well as performances in NorwayBelgiumHollandGermany and France. Catch them live and make up your own mind.
