Weekend Videos: Birdy Nam Nam – “Goin In”

My first experience of a Birdy Nam Nam show was an unexpected surprise as the French collective took the stage and blew my mind with their tag team delivery and bombastic live show as headliners at 2009’s Parisian Rock En Seine festival. Though I hadn’t done much homework about them before this appearance and did not know what I was in for, I ended up loving how each of the Crazy-B, DJ Pone, DJ Need, and Little Mike‘s offered their own melodic dimension to the overall track brilliantly.

Having just released the ‘Jaded Future‘ EP this summer featuring reworks by the likes of Skrillex, Foreign Beggars, and Pelican Fly it’s likely their fame will only keep growing and I suspect the North American market is the next target in sight. On record they’re just as impressive as they are live offering multiple dimensions and never focussing on just one genre and this remix EP is no different.

Foreign Beggars take the title track down a decidedly Hip Hop route with the MCs spitting venom on a wonderfully understated sample maximising the impact of the music loop. Unlike other rap releases this seems like it actually has something to say and the sample is as good as anything you will hear from a major star this year. Pelican Fly keeps the ‘Jaded Future‘s basic identity minimising his tampering to some minimalistic glitches and synths lending the track an eerie feel that actually works well.

Undoubtedly the remix/tracks that will be mentioned the most will be appropriately titled “Going Hard” and “Going Down” remixes that Mr Sonny Moore, AKA Skrillex, offers for the track “Goin In” . Whereas for one he’ takes down a dirty D&B route that will have you jumping from your seat instantly whereas the latter is slightly more introspective.

Birdy Nam Nam are constantly evovling and pushing new boundaries. This EP serves as a great introduction to what they’re all about.
