Embracing Chaos: A Review of Jean Dawson’s “CHAOS NOW”

Jean Dawson‘s latest album, “CHAOS NOW” is a testament to his unwavering commitment to musical self-exploration. Refusing to be confined to any particular genre, Dawson draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, including Brockhampton, Nirvana, Odd Future, and The Smiths. Despite the potential for a disjointed collection of sounds, he has managed to create a cohesive project where every element serves the song.

The album opens with “THREE HEADS,” an aggressive and harmonious track that sets the tone for what is to come. “POSITIVE ONE NEGATIVE ONE” is a sludgy, rage-filled song with a captivating bassline that leads into “BAD FRUIT,” one of the album’s standout tracks featuring Earl Sweatshirt. This song exemplifies Dawson‘s growth as an artist and his impressive musical prowess.

The second half of the album is just as unrelenting. “SCREW FACE” embodies the chaos in the album title, with unexpected sonic diversions that suggest Dawson is attempting to shape the raw materials in his mind as well as on record. “HUH” is a high-energy track that allows Dawson to unleash his “guitar god” mode, delivering impressive guitar licks that wouldn’t be out of place on an ’80s metal album.

The album’s closing pair, “SICK OF IT” and “PIRATE RADIO” take the two extremes of his sound to their logical end. The former is a straight-up pop-punk banger, leading into a surprisingly hopeful string-driven closer with the latter. Despite the darkness that Dawson hints at throughout the album, the optimistic note he ends on is reassuring.

With this album, Jean Dawson has shown a commendable willingness to challenge himself creatively. The album’s tension and release invite listeners to literally embrace “CHAOS NOW” and appreciate Dawson’s unique talent.
