Weekend Videos: Fever Ray – “What They Call Us”

Swedish singer Karin Dreijer, also known as Fever Ray, has made a comeback with her first new song in five years. “What They Call Us” features the reunion of Dreijer with her brother and former partner in The Knife, Olof Dreijer.

The track demonstrates restraint as its strength, using a decaying keyboard pattern, tribal beats, and eerie notes that hark back to The Knife‘s signature style of weirdness and experimentation. The lyrics express a sense of yearning with left-field ideas and clever wordplay, such as the repeated refrain, “Can you fix it, can you care?

The accompanying video, directed by Martin Falck, is eerie and hypnotic, starting with Dreijer as an office worker before morphing into a darker, more sinister scene that illustrates the theme of yearning within spiritual imprisonment.

With “What They Call Us,” Fever Ray proves that she’s back and here to stay. The song highlights her unique artistry and continued willingness to push creative boundaries.
