Cougar Microbes Selects: Electro August 2022

A selection of new and/or relevant electro-leaning tracks that have recently left an impression on us!

Little Dragon – “Frisco”

Little Dragon‘s single “Frisco” from the EP “Opening The Door” is a refreshing downtempo tune that oozes sensuality. The Swedish outfit have always succeeded in delivering a somewhat timeless quality over subsequent releases, with “Frisco” they have gone above and beyond. The track is a beguiling dancefloor gem that demands the listener’s attention with its sharp and assured beats and R&B-infused vibes. As Little Dragon continue to mature they are sounding sharper than ever

Four Tet – “Mango Feedback

Four Tet makes a welcome return with the single “Mango Feedback,” a track that harks back to some of his earlier works. Boasting a plucked string loop and a relentless circular beat that is emphatic, this feels like the perfect track for a night out, although admittedly its unexpected mallet passages may have you reaching for your iPhone to see if your alarm is accidentally going off.

This release was backed up with the more mellow “Watersynth,” with both representing welcome additions to Four Tet‘s ever-growing collection of music.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – “Never Seen You Dancing

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs‘ “Never Seen You Dance” is an upbeat indie dance track that showcases the producer’s unique blend of sleek retro dance-pop blended with some veritable indie sensibilities. The song’s thumping basslines, crooning vocals, and big piano riff create a wave of nostalgia that harks back to the heyday of ’80s pop.

It has been almost 12 years to the day since we attended the launch of his “Household Goods” EP and I find myself equally excited about this release!

FKJ – “A Moment Of Mystery” feat. Toro y Moi

FKJ teams up with Toro y Moi for the single “A Moment of Mystery” and the result is a match made in heaven. The evident connection between the two artists has resulted in hazy synths and cool piano flourishes that complement Chaz Bear‘s sweet croon to perfection. “A Moment of Mystery” is an elegant track that on the surface sounds simple but reveals more and more intricacies with each subsequent listen.

Sylvan Esso – “Didn’t Care

Didn’t Care” finds Sylvan Esso at their most fearless and intimate yet. The track is a stunningly honest and cathartic piece of music, conveying complex themes of love, regret, and companionship. With an electric finesse, the North Carolina outfit take the listener on a journey through shared past experiences, making the track feel like a hazy memory. It’s high energy, it’s fuzzy, and it’s everything we’ve come to love from this awesome duo.
