Introducing The Love Ways

It’s been argued by people with far more knowledge in the matter than me that not enough time has passed since the peak of the global pandemic to really understand its true aftermath. However, it feels certain to me that amidst this worldwide crisis, some people emerged hungry, focused, and reinvigorated. The Love Ways undoubtedly fall into this category.

After playing together for over a decade, Mark Shreve and James Langlois chose to strip down to a two-piece during the craziest time the world has seen. Now, as we hopefully move beyond those challenging days, I firmly believe that what the world needs most are anthemic indie rock tunes and infectious melodies. To their credit, this duo delivers on both accounts.

Over the years, Mark and James have embarked on an artistic and songwriting journey, refining their signature sound and honing their performing craft. As English majors and avid book enthusiasts, their music reflects a diverse and occasionally unorthodox range of influences. Perhaps I’m projecting, but I sense their camaraderie and shared passions shining through their music.

They initially captured our attention with the mesmerizing release “Desire Lines“. Recorded at Audio Pilot Studios with producer Rob Freeman (known for his work with Hidden in Plain View), it is evident that they approached the session with a clear vision, aiming to capture the essence of their favourite songs from their teenage years. The result is a meticulously crafted track that demands repeat listens, thanks to its energetic instrumentals, soaring choruses, and introspective lyrics.

In their own words,

[The song speaks of] the repetitive and unplanned paths we encounter throughout our lives. These off-road grooves of life and love that we settle into, guide us on trails only we can perceive on our journey toward choice, self-definition, and permanent change. It poses the question, ‘In the conclave of the self, which colour will your smoke be in the end?

Drawing influence from albums like “Hot Fuss” by The Killers and “Futures” by Jimmy Eat World, it was immediately apparent to me that their music would speak to me. Moreover, their back-to-basics approach and euphoric energy remind me of the Canadian duo Japandroids, a reference point that becomes even more evident in their previous release, “Wild Life.”

The accompanying music video perfectly complements the band’s electrifying performance. Shot in striking black and white, the video captures their high-octane energy, while focusing on Mark and James‘ stage charisma. Despite the deliberate emphasis on their individual performances, their seamless chemistry is self-evident. It’s as if they are playing to thrill and inspire one another, just as much if not more than those watching. That authentic connection is something I truly appreciate.

It has been quite some time since I felt genuinely excited about an indie rock release, but “Desire Lines” has reignited that longing with its captivating and electrifying performance. With their undeniable energy and raw charisma, The Love Ways has the potential to establish themselves as the next force in a long lineage of talented NYC acts to have taken over the world.
