Cougar Microbes Selects: Electronic September 2023

A selection of new and/or relevant electro-leaning tracks that have recently left an impression on us!

Stereo Print – “Closer”

Stereo Print‘s “Closer” is a sensual bop that effortlessly merges Parisian elegance with London‘s edginess. The spellbinding electropop track captivates from start to finish.

Closer” is built on a buoyant bassline and a restrained yet evocative vocal delivery that offers a harmonious contrast to the sparse instrumentation pushing the synths and guitars to sound particularly lush. The result seamlessly intertwines classic disco motifs with modern beats and radiates positivity

Stereo Print‘s craftsmanship is evident in every chord and phrase. As summer heats up, “Closer” has emerged as the perfect sonic accompaniment for the times I am looking to entertain (and/or impress) my friends with breezy melodies and infectious beats.

Sugar Nova – Tiny Helicopters (JackLNDN Remix)

Sugar Nova‘s ‘Tiny Helicopters‘ was already a whimsical and highly enjoyable electropop number to begin with. For his remix treatment of the track, JackLNDN opted not to go for a complete transformation but rather to build on the original’s star quality, while still adding an enchanting dose of euphoric magnetism.

The emotional impact of the Denver duo’s original is injected with something I can only describe as ingenuity, breathing new life into the song’s themes of freedom and escape. The song’s flowery vibrancy is amplified to new heights, beginning gently before soaring into an irresistible breakdown that beckons my body to at least make an attempt at moving.

Sugar Nova‘s ‘Tiny Helicopters (JackLNDN Remix)‘ is a luminous summer jam that invites the listener to groove and dream away to its infectious rhythm. It’s an absolute treasure for fans of Electropop with a twist.

The Screaming Pope – “Correct Picture Color”

The Screaming Pope is a project masterminded by Bostonian electronic virtuoso George Bolton, an artist who seemingly never rests. The project first caught our attention with the April release of the full-length “Correct Picture Color“, but a perfunctory look at his streaming profiles suggests there have been at least 5 albums released since. Regardless, “Correct Picture Color” feels like a good introduction to his work, propelling listeners through a mesmerizing labyrinth of musical dimensions and influences.

Take the track “Accidental Mullet“, for example, which bursts with its enthralling fusion of art-pop attitude and celestial synths. Elsewhere “Escondes” exudes a contagious indie-pop groove and Latin influences, showcasing his melodic finesse. Throughout the album, ethereal synths drift in and out stitching together seemingly diverse tracks into a harmonious tapestry. Bolton‘s artistic dexterity extends beyond soundscapes; a graduate of art school, he designs the album covers, visually mirroring the audial eclecticism. The album’s incorporation of AI-generated vocal samples imparts an uncanny yet human quality and ultimately feels particularly topical in this day and age.

Bolton‘s dedication to shaking up the boundaries of electronic music is palpable, making his music into a delightful auditory escapade. The Screaming Pope‘s ability to seamlessly interweave electronic, funk, and ambient elements underscores the nature of his creative expression.

Retro Kid – “Simbi”

Retro Kid‘s latest creation, ‘SIMBI,’ is an immersive masterpiece that defies modern-day music industry conventions. In concept, it is a pleasing throwback to a time when DJs and producers regularly ‘borrowed‘ samples and vocal loops. Specifically in this case, his remix of ‘Her‘ by Little Simz results in an ethereal experience meticulously crafted to captivate even the most discerning listener. With its intricate fusion of deep basslines, hypnotic synth lines, and offbeat drum grooves, ‘SIMBI‘ forms an evocative soundscape.

The track is part of Retro Kid‘s ‘Never Met…,‘ a playlist of tracks using the vocals from artists he loves and working them into his own music. The outcome is a sonic marvel that proves music is more than sound – it’s an experience.

Dan Webb – “Drifter”

Dan Webbs “Drifter” is a kaleidoscopic journey within his genre-blurring masterpiece, “Sunshine/Dialogue“. With 15 years of creative evolution, Webb blends electronic, psychedelic, and rock influences into an enchanting sonic tapestry.

Drifter” captivates from the start, blending infectious beats with electronic textures that defy expectations. Webb‘s fearless approach to experimentation ensures each note resonates with intrigue. The track’s fusion of styles mirrors the album’s overarching theme of transcending musical norms.

In under three minutes, “Drifter” transports us through a sonic wonderland. It encapsulates the very essence of “Sunshine/Dialogue” – an ode to pushing creative limits while maintaining an engaging musicality. Dan Webb‘s artistry shines, urging us to embrace the unknown. Throughout his avant-garde tendencies are balanced by an accessible pop sensibility
