Weekend Videos: Yumi Zouma – “Desert Mile”

Let the record show, that my editor, a self-proclaimed lyric video hater, initially resisted this review. It took a spirited argument, fueled by my unwavering belief in the magic of “Desert Mile” by Yumi Zouma, to sway him. After relenting and giving it one listen, he was equally under its spell, his scepticism replaced by a sheepish grin. Consider this review a testament to the song’s irresistible charm. Besides, as far as lyric videos go, this one is pretty poignant.

Desert Mile” is a standout moment on Yumi Zouma‘s recent EP IV‘. It’s a sun-drenched odyssey, a bittersweet journey through shimmering indie pop that lingers long after the last note fades. Frontwoman Christie Simpson, with her effortless charisma, delivers lines like “I think we had it, it was just too strong/ I’d find it easier on my own” with a melancholic grace that’s both relatable and heartbreaking.

Born from a reunion in Tokyo, “Desert Mile” pulsates with cascading piano lines and robust drums that perfectly complement the band’s harmonious vocals. Yumi Zouma‘s signature dreamy sheen is ever-present, but here it’s infused with nods to ’90s noise, shoegaze, and even midwestern emo marking a subtle yet significant evolution for the band. ultimately, “Desert Mile” is a piece of shimmering brilliance.
