In this Indie/Rock June 2026 edition, discover a diverse selection spanning folk, country, ballads, grunge rock and alternative.

Matthew Spreen – “Mysterious Gibberish”
“Mysterious Gibberish” sounds like delicate waves curling at your feet. It is the creation of Canadian singer-songwriter Matthew Spreen and features on his latest album Particles. An alternative indie folk song, it covers a lot of ground in its very short runtime of 1.35 minutes.
“Mysterious Gibberish” pairs a grainy texture with very soothing tones throughout the song or “wisps” as he calls it. There is also a natural synergy between the vocals and the guitar, but they also drift away from each other. Spreen’s vocals transition from breathy to velvety, anchored by the undercurrent drift of the guitar. You just gotta let this wash over you.
Patrick Quinn – “Silent Voices”
“Silent Voices” is a whopping seven minute ballad which relies on the power of patience. The brainchild of Irish singer-songwriter Patrick Quinn, this is his debut single and is a deeply personal song about his experiences with his non-verbal autistic son. It allows ample space for each instrument and vocals to shine.
“Silent Voices” has a sweeping, cinematic folk soundscape. His raw vocals mix gorgeously with the lifting of the string sections and the high overtones of the flute. The highlight, however, is during the bridge when a quiet piano solo takes the center stage. Quinn truly knows how to craft folk ballads about lived experiences.

They Owe Us – “Frank”
“Frank” feels like something I’d faintly hear late at night, playing from a distant bar. There is a muffled, neon-lit vibe to it. Released by Swedish indie rock band They Owe Us, the song is about “Frank” who is wild, unpredictable and yet loyal despite it all.
There is an interesting mix of sounds in the instrumentation. While the rhythm section anchors the track, the moody piano chords set the atmosphere and the jagged guitar riffs slice through the mix. The vocals, on top of that, almost sound like they’re behind a smokescreen. Ultimately, “Frank” by They Owe Us captures the late night, insomniac energy very well.
Yacovelli – “Since Emilia”
Yacovelli is bringing back the electrifying 90s neo-grunge music with their latest single “Since Emilia”. The band is a punk and neo grunge project led by Alex Yacovelli, who also serves as the DIY producer for their songs.
“Since Emilia” kicks off with a haunting, twisting acoustic melody and sets up a moody, mysterious atmosphere. Just when you feel like you have the sound figured out, it unexpectedly explodes into a wall of thick, gritty guitar riffs. The vocal delivery is raw and passionate. Yacovelli makes such an absolute blast of a song that you barely wonder who Emilia even is.

Bill Walsh – “So Many Things”
“So Many Things” is a folk country song that feels like the very definition of “heartwarming”. A recent single by Australian singer-songwriter Bill Walsh (who was shortlisted for the Australian Songwriters Award in the country music category), “So Many Things” is about the daily exhaustion of evergrowing tasks and time slipping through our fingers.
Using the apt moniker Bill Walsh Guitar, he displays excellent acoustic soulful guitar work in the song. It is backed up by a gentle and unhurried rhythm section while his vocal delivery remains warm and conversational. Walsh creatively juxtaposes the anxieties of the lyrics with music that feels like a sigh of relief.
