Django Django sound like a band who headed out on a gap year to Africa and only brought old Talking Heads and The Beta Band tapes along for the ride. The latter is not a completely casual reference as leader David Maclean is related to one of the Betas. First appearing on the scene in 2009 it has taken the 4-piece this long to finally unleash their eponymous debut on the world but fortunately it has been worth the wait.
Our very own Olivia said this was “one of the albums that I have taken a lot of pleasure in listening to this year. With ‘Django Django‘, the London based quartet have tried to redefine what indie means in a period where the term is becoming increasingly blurry. Truthfully there’s nothing really groundbreaking or grandiose about ‘Django Django‘ per se. It’s just a clever, enjoyable, well produced album. At first I was somewhat overwhelmed by the various sounds, influences and different beats that were present on the album, but I soon realised that the sound of Django Django is actually rather minimal, coherent and extremely effective”.
Thom added them to his year end list stating that ““Wor” was one of those tracks that made you want to simultaneously fight and fornicate in the same moment. It’s irresistible guitar line and percussion was defintely not the only hit from this solid and punchy debut”.
