Introducing Readership

My first exposure to Readership came with the track “Fossil“, from the excellently titled ‘New Ways to Make the Same Mistakes‘ album. The track’s descriptive lyrics and build up towards a shout-along chorus offered a subtle hint to the 90s alt scene that I grew up adoring.

I’ve been following the Philadelphia 4-piece’s endeavours since then and genuinely enjoying the way their sound has developed. While there were undoubtedly some darker details evident in previous material it feels like the songs from this latest release fully embrace, and dare I say celebrate, the band’s more sinister side. The band has a rare knack of taking very poppy melodies and colliding them with some post-punk riffs in a way that reminds me of the awesome Scottish band Idlewild.

What I really love about Readership is that you can draw a common thread through the individual tracks on their releases. That is not to say that all their songs sound alike, quite the opposite, but the quartet is doing a great job at carving out their own sound.

The “Birds Of North America” EP is out now and is available on Bandcamp and all streaming services
