#05 Cougar Microbes Top Albums of 2010: Tokyo Police Club – Champ

Having shown so much promise on their debut Tokyo Police Club returned with their brilliant second full length ‘Champ‘  in 2010. Right from the opening notes you are in for something special with the band making the matter of writing catchy anthemic songs seem wholly painless.

The Canadians manage to build on all the early promise they displayed whilst throwing a few interesting curveballs into their indie meets punk meets pop template.

Back in July Cougar regular Kenny commented that Tokyo Police Clubseem to have a fresh, different, brilliant idea for every day of the calendar year.’ It is for this reason that these 11 intelligent upbeat tracks demand to be returned to frequently.

Tokyo Police Club support The ASPCA plus RAC Remix

We previously featured RAC (Remix Artist Collective) meddling with Cougar favourites Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros to great effect. It is always a pleasure to hear them re-craft my favourite indie hits and it’s cool that they have taken on Tokyo Police Club (for the 6th time!!), given that we featuted them the other day.

This time it is for a worthy cause; by donating to the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) through the band’s website you will get a download the video, and receive both the RAC and DOM remixes of “Wait Up (Boots of Danger).” Once again 100% of each sale will be donated to the ASPCA®.

Tokyo Police Club release Champ

On the basis of Tokyo Police Club’s debut album ‘Elephant Shell’ they are a strange breed of band. There are elements to their sound, specifically the über-polished elements, which almost turn you off. Almost. But there is simply far too much about this outfit to get excited about. Firstly they are Canadian, and you wish you were Canadian. Secondly the album was released on Saddle Creek. Thirdly, and crucially, they seem to have a fresh, different, brilliant idea for every day of the calendar year.

And so it goes that ‘Favourite Food’, the opening track from new album ‘Champ’, sounds like nothing they have done before, yet provides exactly what you were hoping for. Bastards! The trend simply continues throughout the album. ‘Breakneck Speed’; infectious as hell, ‘Bambi’; creative as hell, ‘Hands Reversed’; melancholic as hell, and ‘Frankenstein’; hell raiser, albeit a slow burning one.

Tokyo Police Club have a knack of writing songs that sit somewhere between indie and straight out pop with a healthy slab of old school punk rock spirit. You can probably deduce from my transcribed salivation that their music is increasingly becoming part of my staple diet. It ought to be part of yours too.
