Weekend Videos: Fintan McKahey – “God Games”

For his recent single “God GamesFintan McKahey shows the value of restraint and placing your trust in a great melody. Over a sparse cut, Fintan‘s vocals represent a warm and instantly familiar glow with radiance being a motif that is also replicated in the official video. Much like the track, the video is a lesson in “less is more“.

Having grown up in West Cork, Ireland, Fintan already has a considerable musical pedigree in his family, his father Rob McKahey is Stump‘s drummer and his uncle is Cousteau singer Liam McKahey. However, based on the sounds of his latest release he is very much paving his own path.

Inspired by his travels through landscapes as diverse as Kenya, Thailand, Peru as well as his own home country the ‘GOD GAMES‘ EP is a departure from previous releases shedding some folk sounds altogether. Instead, over the course 8 tracks (including a couple of interludes) the singer offers a downtempo guitar-led sound that places the vocals- direct and unvarnished- front and centre and relies on simple yet effective looped minimal percussive patterns to get the message across. The result is engaging and often hypnotic.
