Montana Joanna steps out with the kind of poise that makes a debut feel like a proper first statement rather than a test run. “Same Stars” works best as an easygoing first swing, keeping things light without losing its shape.
What grabs you is the feel. The bass is warm and springy, the drums sit just behind the beat with an easy lilt, and the whole thing carries a laid-back, lived-in swing. The horns add a little sparkle without barging in, and the jazzy touches give it character against a restrained melody.
Her vocal suits the arrangement well: clean, natural, and gently playful, it gives the alien-and-astrology lyric enough wit to land without overplaying its hand. The writing has a sly sense of humour, but the track never tips into novelty. The final instrumental flourish is the neatest payoff, lifting the song at just the right moment.
It’s a quietly assured debut with enough charm and musical lift to make Montana Joanna easy to root for.
