GUMR – “Acid Freq”
GUMR’s“Acid Freq,” a deep tech banger every raver would love. The Portsmouth producer brings his roster of rolling grooves, gritty analogue textures, and that unmistakable TB-303 squelch in this track. The result is an electronica fiesta
Techno fans would instantly recognize his old-school underground influences, albeit the modern production. The industrial-driven sound gives the track its main character aura, but underneath it all the effects work together to add texture without meddling with the groove. The build-ups may be long but are super effective, slowly turning up the tension before letting the beat loose.
“Acid Freq” knows exactly what it’s doing – getting people moving. And honestly, resisting the groove might be the hardest part.
Milyam – “Dream”
Milyam takes listeners on a weird little ride through dreams and reality in her single “Dream.” The track can be categorized as an art rap sound that uses electronica and hip-hop elements to create a dark, nocturnal atmosphere where details shift slightly out of focus every now and then.
The minimal production creates space for Milyam’s vocals and poetry-like delivery to settle. Instead of explaining what is real and what isn’t, she keeps her listener on their toes, moving through distorted, hazy thoughts that have been pulled straight from the subconscious. Milyam simply stays inside this “dream,” letting its mood build naturally around her words.
This song feels like the background score to your REM dreams. The ones that make absolutely no sense but somehow feel completely real at the time.
Magdi Aboul-Kheir – “Past is Calling”
Magdi Aboul-Kheir kicks off his latest record “Yesterday’s Future” with “Past Is Calling,” a synth-wave track that establishes the album’s fascination with the past. The album’s mood may be about the past and nostalgia but the production is quite futuristic. This dichotomy creates a fun mix of old-school ideas and electronic textures.
Delicate, hypnotic synths give the track a smooth, spacey vibe, while the main melody forms a dramatic layer. Have you ever watched one of those old sci-fi movies where everything looks slightly more optimistic than real life? This song is an embodiment of that feeling.
“Past Is Calling” works well as an opener because it creates curiosity but still keeps the mystery of the rest of the album alive. It’s nostalgic and futuristic, all at the same time and just weird enough to make you want to hear what comes next.
