Bloodkin – “Enemy Within”
Bloodkin’s “Enemy Within” brings to you a blast from the past – a mix of Americana, blues rock and classic rodeo vibes. The track boasts gritty rock roots with bluesy guitar lines, sing-along harmonies, and a saxophone full of attitude that gives the track more dynamism.
The classic rock influence is very clear in the song, with shades of The Rolling Stones and Tom Petty running through the entire arrangement.
There is also a certain emotional tie bound to this release. This marks the band’s first single since Daniel Hutchens passed away. It’s almost as if Bloodkin lets his presence live through the music. Every groove feels like a continuation of the creative partnership he shared with Eric Carter for decades.
The Sonic Travelers – “Please Comfort Me”
The Sonic Travelers bring a warm, old-school vibe to “Please Comfort Me,” a country-esque ballad about loneliness, tenacity, and simply needing someone by your side. The duo consisting of George Aiello and John Ingram revisit a song that they wrote decades ago, remastering it to a fresh arrangement without losing the charm of the original.
You can hear gentle acoustic guitars and soft piano create an easygoing background, while the tender lead vocals wear the song’s emotions on its sleeve. The backing harmonies add a lovely lift to the choruses without making the track feel too clustered. The electric guitar solos add an edge to the track which makes it even melodic to the ears.
The song’s simplicity is its beauty. The repeated plea for comfort feels incredibly human, especially as the lyrics move from looking back at difficult times toward finding hope in friendship and companionship.
The song is a comforting listen for anyone who’s ever needed a little reminder that they don’t have to handle everything alone.
Shaven Primates – “Saviour”
Shaven Primates kick off their albumKill The Algorithm with “Saviour,” a progressive grunge track that makes you wanna headbang from the very opening riff. You can hear the raw audacity of grunge with a more modern arrangement, creating a nu-grunge/post grunge arrangement that is very reminiscent of bands like Alice in Chains.
The bass work is absolutely killer in this track. The spiralling, melodic guitar lines give the track that hallucinogenic feel which as an avid AIC fan really stood out to me. The drums are steady, slow and each note falls on impact. Raw guitars add the grit, with moments of twin-guitar interplay that bring some old-school rock energy into the mix.
The song has that messy edge you’d expect from grunge, but there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. If you loved the 90’s, this band should definitely be on your playlist!
No Drinks For Jimmy – “Broken”
No Drinks For Jimmy is bringing back the 2000s with “Broken,” an alt rock number full of angst and grit. Punk-influenced guitars, energetic drums, and passionate vocals give the song character. The lead guitar lines especially stand out and also kind of breaks the mould a little bit which I liked a lot.
The band explores the messy aftermath of fractured relationships and what happens when you reach rock bottom. Their idea of treating recovery like your own personal 12-step program makes the track relatable to those who have struggled with said issues. There’s no pretention, just mirrored reality. The song is about facing the damage before figuring out what comes next.
The guitars shift between gritty riffs and atmospheric moments. Fans of Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, and Stone Temple Pilots will find this track especially enjoyable.
Gideon Unna – “Heaven is here”
If I had to associate Gideon Unna’s “Heaven Is Here” with particular smells, they would be sage, patchouli and incense. The track is very spiritual in its core and the lyrics ask the pertinent question of whether we might already experience heaven in the small, mundane moments of everyday life.
Rooted in folk, the track is inspired by the sound of 60s and 70s folk, rock, and soul. If you love artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez you will really dig this track’s melody, harmony, and straightforwardness.
Naomi Shapira’s vocals add a rather colloquial dimension to the song. Their voices work together naturally, reinforcing the track’s message about connection and shared experiences.
“Heaven Is Here” creates a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart and encourages you to notice the good things already around you.
