Deja Renee – “Falling (Lose My Mind)”
For a song that deals with the post-break-up spiral, “Falling (Lose My Mind)” by San Diego native Deja Renee feels like you’re walking among clouds. This r&b/soul ambient-pop track uses cosmic, ethereal soundscapes to map out her messy emotional state through heartbreak, anxiety and eventual self-discovery.
The lyrics detail the poignant fear of letting the emotions “swallow” you whole. The crisp electric guitar lines and the groovy beats paired with drifting synths and Renee’s lush, airy vocal delivery (reminiscent of Kali Uchis) mirror capture the vulnerability of the piece. The final a capella moment of “Falling (Lose My Mind)” allows her rich harmonies to float in the quiet; a representation of picking up the pieces of your heart by yourself.
Kaitlin Corbett Jones – “Make The World Stand Still”
Kailtin Corbett Jones’ “Make The World Stand Still” is a breath of fresh air among short, algorithm driven pop songs. A soaring, cinematic pop ballad meant for the stage, it also manages to capture the raw vulnerability of her feelings. Hailing from Wisconsin, Kaitlin Corbett Jones brings her powerhouse vocals shaped by classical and contemporary pop training.
The instrumentals build a rich atmosphere with delicate strings and a roaring guitar solo. Jones is, of course, the highlight with her dynamic voice (akin to Celine Dion) shifting from a breathy lower register to resonant belts that showcase the heavy nostalgia of a past relationship. “Make The World Stand Still”, as a result, feels classic and timeless.

C Sid – “The Mother Queen
“The Mother Queen” by C Sid is a catchy fusion of electronic pop and alternative rock which layers big, anthemic sounding guitar riffs over punchy dance beats. Instead of following an EDM drop or a traditional pop-rock chorus, the track explodes into a guitar driven hook mixed with electro-pop synths.
The lead vocals are very strong and it is boosted by highly energetic gang vocals in the background. The momentum continues into the bridge, which delivers a vocal breakdown with those gang vocals in full power. Just when you think the bridge is over, C Sid surprises us with a second atmospheric breakdown, keeping listeners hooked until the song ends.
Stefanie Michaela – “Let Me See The Real You”
“Let Me See The Real You” by Stefanie Michaela is a song I could easily imagine in a major Disney movie with its infectious pop melody and empowering message. It is easy to envision a quintessential pop song like this becoming a major hit among the vibrant, synth heavy pop tracks of the 2010s.
Based in Los Angeles and trained in musical theatre, Stephanie Michaela carries the song with her confident vocal delivery, which is both grounded yet powerful. Furthermore, it also has a very addictive hook that gets stuck in your head. “Let Me See The Real You” bottles the essence of a feel-good anthem and thrives because of its simplicity.

MothBreath – “Summer Dreaming”
“Summer Dreaming” instantly captivated me with its rich, hypnotizing soundscapes, like I’m being pulled into a warped memory. Composed by UK-based duo MothBreath, the psychedelic indie-rock and dream-pop song is also a part of their latest eponymous EP. MothBreath builds a vintage and expansive atmosphere using reverb and saturated sounds.
While the composition is kept grounded by its rhythm section, John Libert’s swirling guitar riffs loop into a dizzying, dreamlike flow. However, the true highlight is Kirsty Dougall’s eerie vocal runs and floating adlibs which transform the song into a haunting, introspective space. Interestingly, these elements of “Summer Dreaming” capture the nocturnal vibe of summer.
